Adolescent Literacy: State Offers Principals Incentives to Strengthen Their Leadership in Adolescent Literacy

Building principals juggle tasks from the highly interesting to the mundane. Offering incentives that recognize school leaders for improvement in student literacy elevates the likelihood of creative efforts.

Why does it matter?

  • Building-level leaders are in a position to encourage participation in professional development and foster teachers' taking more leadership roles.
  • Administrative support is crucial for implementation of change and assurance of continued focus on literacy efforts across the content areas.

  • No state has stepped forward to be the first to offer principal incentives. 

  • Methodology: The information was collected from state statutes, recently enacted legislation (session laws), and rules and regulations. Where necessary, statewide initiatives created outside of policy were collected from state agencies. The information will be updated as changes occur.
