Career/Technical Education: Agency or Agencies Providing Program Oversight
If an agency is charged with providing program oversight, it exerts control over the content and alignment of the curriculum. Thirty-two states have named the state department or the state board of education the responsible agency. Five states require the state department of education to work with either a workforce development agency or a career and technical education committee to oversee CTE programs. Four states require the state department of education to work with its postsecondary counterpart to oversee CTE offerings. Arkansas has entrusted its Department of Workforce Education with oversight. Four states have established a state board for career and technical education and charged that entity with program oversight. Alabama leaves program review to the local education agency and the Office of Civil Rights.
Why does it matter?
To advance career and technical education, the focus will be on the depth of the curriculum offered both at the secondary and postsecondary levels.
